How Windows Server 2022 activation works

  1. Download the Windows Server 2022 installation media from Microsoft and install Datacenter edition. If you installed from Microsoft’s 180-day evaluation media, convert it first with DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula, because slmgr /ipk will not accept a retail key on an evaluation install. Our Windows Server 2022 download, install and activate guide walks through every screen.
  2. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX with the key from your email, then slmgr /ato. On Desktop Experience you can use Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key instead.
  3. Windows Server contacts Microsoft’s activation servers and reports Windows is activated. No phone call, no third-party tool.
  4. Stuck on an error? Reply to your order email and the support team sorts it out.

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter system requirements

Microsoft’s published minimums are a 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor with NX/DEP, SLAT, SSE4.2 and POPCNT support, 512 MB of RAM (2 GB for Desktop Experience), 32 GB of disk and a Gigabit Ethernet adapter. Secured-core features such as virtualization-based security need TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and an IOMMU.

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter key FAQs

Is this a Windows Server 2022 Datacenter key or a Standard key?

Datacenter. It licenses the physical server with unlimited Windows Server virtual machines. If you will only ever run the host plus two VMs, the Standard 24-core key costs the same and does the job.

How many cores does this Windows Server 2022 licence cover?

24 physical cores on one server. Microsoft licenses Windows Server per core with a floor of 16 cores per server and 8 per processor, so this key covers any server with up to 24 physical cores in total, for example 1 × 24 or 2 × 12 cores. Every physical core must be licensed. Above 24 cores, contact support for Datacenter core options.

Do I need CALs as well as this key?

Yes. The server licence covers the operating system; every user or device that accesses it needs a Windows Server CAL, and anyone connecting over Remote Desktop needs an RDS CAL too. Our Windows Server licensing guide has the worked examples.

How long is Windows Server 2022 supported?

Mainstream support ended on 13 October 2026; extended support with security updates runs until 14 October 2031. If you want the longest runway, Windows Server 2025 Standard is supported until 14 November 2034.

Can I use the key on more than one server?

No. One key activates one server. The 3-server and 5-server options give you three or five separate keys, working out at $33.33 or $40.00 per server against $49.99 for one; the licence stays with the machine each key activates on, and reinstalling on that same machine is fine.

Where do I download Windows Server 2022?

From Microsoft. The download, install and activate guide links Microsoft’s own media and shows where the key goes. Avoid installation media from any source other than Microsoft.
